How to stay safe when meeting someone

Practical precautions for meeting someone from a personal ad, with consent and privacy first.

Take time before meeting

Ask questions and be cautious about pressure, inconsistent stories or requests for money. A photo or selfie video does not prove somebody is safe. Never send deposits, gift cards or financial details to a stranger. You can stop a conversation at any time.

Plan a public first meeting

Choose a public place, tell a trusted person where you are going and arrange your own transport. Keep your home address private. Have a way to leave if you feel uncomfortable, and do not depend on the other person for a ride home.

Consent is ongoing

Agree on boundaries without pressure. Anyone can change their mind at any time. An ad, reply or meeting never implies consent to physical intimacy. Do not meet if you cannot freely and clearly decide what you want.

Report concerns

Use the Report option on an ad or contact the site about suspected scams, exploitation, minors or sex-for-money offers. In an immediate emergency in the United States, call 911. The site is not an emergency service and cannot guarantee safety at an off-site meeting.
